Piopolis is a little town on the other side of the lake from where I live. A really cute little place with some stores by local artisans, a health civic pride and a population of 460 people. Like I said it’s small.
Nestled just up the road from the little boat ramp and marina is a kayak rental joint and kite shop (yes a kite shop) with a seasonal cafe attached. My wife came here the week before with her sister and loved it. What’s not to like I say? The place is super cute and given where it is serves a suprisingly good selection of coffee styles and does them pretty well. I had a Bol de Cafe au Lait and my only complaints are these:
- It was just a little too weak and watery
- The roast was a bit on the generic side
But having said that, the ambiance and the friendly staff/owner were absolutely lovely. The dude that was making the coffees was saying that in the off season he travels around the world and returns each summer to work again. What a life!!
Side Note: When he asked where I was from and I mentioned I was living in Lac-Megantic and was from Australia he replied “I’ve heard of you!!”. Gotta love small towns eh?
The prices are excellent, really excellent, the service frinedly and prompt and the ambiance lovely; and make up for the slightly better than average coffee. I would recommend La Bouffée d’Air - Café-Kayak to anyone driving through the area for a pleasant stop over. Viva les Cantons d’Est!

Hi Rob.
A friend sent me this Cafe Geek review & I subsequently checked your trip home blog. We are trying to live in Piopolis…. pending Canadian Immigration’s permission for permanent residency. I am a Yank & have a biz at Sugarloaf/USA across the border in Maine, my husband is a Kiwi & our son was born in Methven, NZ, but we moved to Oz, where John had been working since age 19…to the Snowy Mountains where we have a home now being rented out!
We saw your boat going by our place on the lake this summer the day the motorbikes were in town & wondered who had the Aussie flag, so I’m stoked to find out who you are!
Enjoy your stay Down Under, hope to say G’day sometime when you get back to the Great White north! The lake froze over three days ago; the moon was magnificent upon the new ice the past couple of nights, but now we’ve had new snow. Will be a White Chrissie for sure.
Cheers & Happy Holidays.
