I roamed the streets of Montreal, after a gruelling day of shaking hands with Republicans and business types at a seminar cum shmoozefest, looking for escape. With a cigarette hanging from my mouth and a swagger one can only associate with prostituting ones beliefs for business opportunities, I looked for sweet release… The taste and smell of a good coffee. Too tired to roam the streets any more, I found Alexandre Restaurant Français.

They have a little aldresco style terrasse out front and the interior was dumly lit with deep reds and dark wood on the walls. I chose the terrasse and ordered a latte from my mafioso looking waiter. Surveying my surroundings I noticed a crowd made up of lost tourists, sad looking business types and young trendsetters. Pretty good for my books.

NOTE: One thing that did catch my eye was the business next door “Funkytown, Club Discoteque”. Complete with wall to wall mirrored tiles on the entrance. It was closed, but I WILL return one day to hear them play MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice.

My coffee arrived and the mafioso announced “Cafe Con Leche” as he put it on the table. Cool. I was in Cuba. The coffee wasn’t bad at all. But not great. The temperature was good, the blend generic but very drinkable and the foam dense but lacking a rosetta. I smoked some more, thought about ordering another coffee and decided against it.

So how do I sum up Alexandre?

• Ambiance:
  Kind of desperate but inviting. Perfect for a lonely business man or somewhere to bring a date you don’t want your friends to meet.
• Coffee:
  Strong and well made but an unchallenging roast
• Service:
  Prompt, friendly and seedy.
• Price:
  Not bad, I paid $4.00 with tip for a coffee.
• Would I go there again?
  Yes, but only if Funkytown was open next door.
