Boulangerie Le Croissant D’Or
2560, rue Laval, Nantès (Lac Megantic)
Quebec, Canada
I have been putting off reviewing this place for a year now. Mostly because it’s no fun to trash somones business.
HOWEVER!! Boulangerie Le Croissant D’Or is now under new ownership and I just had a great breakfast there. The change since the new owners took over has been so great that I had to write a review up straight away.
Located on the main street just outside of town this little cafe bakery does not jump out and say “stop here”, but if the lack of parking outside is any indication of quality then a stop is worthwhile. Since the new owner took over a few months ago the quality of pastries and bread has skyrocketed. The brioche I had was smooth, sweet and buttery. In fact the new owner is from France and speaking to her this morning she has also lived in Switzerland for years, this is a great recipe for pastries i my books.
What was of even greater suprise was the quality of the coffee. I asked for a Latte and was presented with a reasonably well made little brew. My only complaint would have been that it lacked froth. After my first sip I could tell that there was more to the change in management. THE ROAST! The previous owner, if I remember correctly had used something like Van Houtte blends, but what I had just tasted was familiar and good. I rushed excitedly to the rack of beans and saw that the roasts were being supplied by the “Union Cafe” in Montreal. A well known and long established roaster and cafe. They had a nice selection of blends available for purchase including a medium roasted Fair Trade Columbian.
All in all the Lac Megantic cafe scene, all 4 of them, is improving. Kudos to the new owners of Boulangerie Le Croissant D’Or. The pastries and breads are to die for, and the coffee is pretty good with even more potential.
