Cafe Deux Marie

Let me preface this review by saying two things:

  • I was under sever nicotine withdrawal
  • I would like to thank the peeps at the CoffeeGeek forum for the tip.

OK. We bundled the boy into the pram and went cafe searching in Montreal. Contrary to what many say, I think this city has some great cafes, maybe not on a world scale but definately in Canadian terms. We waltzed into Marie and found a buzzing joint with a wide selection of people.

The cafe itself smelled wonderful. The smell of pastries, coffee and food hung in the air as we took a seat in the back to soak in the cafe and it’s clientelle.

We ordered two lattes, not the ubiquitous Quebecois Cafe au Lait, and got our orders quick smart. Anne-Renee had asked for a decaf and we were pleased to be able to order from a variety of roasts. It was well made, if a little unchallenging, and the froth was unlike any I’d seen before. It was almost like negative latte art that you see in cafes more and more. Imagine a blank foamy canvas with a little brown trou de cul in the centre.

After finishing my cup without spilling a drop from no-nicotine shakes, we sidled up to the counter and peroused the selection of roasts available for purchase. In an effort to educate my palate I purchased 5 different roasts:

  1. A Dark Kenyan
  2. A medium Kenyan
  3. A Dark Columbian
  4. A Medium Columbian
  5. A Decaf Dark Blend

I’d come back, the ambiance was decent, the coffee pretty good and the pastries had my name written on them. A very solid three beaner.
