Café Java U
4065 rue Saint-Denis, Montréal
Quebec, Canada
A hot day on rue Saint-Denis in Montreal saw Anne and I seeking refuge from the sun and a chilled cafe to lounge out in. We looked down the street and spied Café Java U. It screamed city cool with it’s bright but relaxed interior and groovy beats playing quietly in the background.
As we took a seat and looked over the cafe we decided that based on decor alone we loved it. The croud was mostly young professional types reading the weekend paper or gossiping with one another or on laptops (probably reading and gossiping at the same time). I noticed a sign to my left with words to the effect of “48% of people surf the internet in their underwear. Please keep your clothes on.” OK, It has wi-fi too!! I ordered a latte and a brownie from the dude at the counter and waited with trepidation for their arrival.
Now the Latte.
The blend of the latte was very good, the foam a little too foamy for my liking but not offensive. But the only thing that killed it for me was the presentation. It was served in a very funky tall glass and they did that thing where the shot and the milk are served layered in the glass. Yes all very nice to look at… but sooooooo passe! I put cup to my lips and tasted. Not bad, not bad at all… Milky but not too milky, a nice roast and good temperature.
It is only now that I’m writing this review that I realise that Café Java U is part of a small chain. I normally have a great aversion to chains, but I enjoyed my experience at Café Java U so much that I’ll definately be back.

I would strongly recommend against going to Java U (saint denis). I was there today and was treated like a piece of dirt because i wanted to stay and work a while. They shut the internet off (without informing people), told me that students were not welcome and raised the prices so that students wouldn’t be in the place. They said there was a 30 minute max stay in the place (even with a greater than $10 purchase). Toilets stunk and 1 of the 2 womens toilets is still out of service, 3 months later. VERY VERY BAD! PS- 1 normal tea was $3.30!
